Cherry Sad

Photographer: Adam Reis, Kunstfest vol. 7

Cherry Sad is a fairy who arrives at parties like someone arriving at destiny. She hunts for a spark, and the engine inside her is intense, strategic and restless. She believes that tonight could be the night something magical happens, and she refuses to leave until it does.

She needs the moment to matter. She craves connection, romance, meaning, validation, and she tries to construct it out of thin air when reality doesn’t provide it fast enough. She builds scenarios, projects possibilities, writes scripts in her head before anything has happened.

She sees people not always for who they are, but for who they could be inside the right narrative. When a moment doesn’t deliver what she hoped for, she doesn’t give up — she creates ten new narratives, ten new chances. Every silence is an opening. Every glance is a cue.

Every second is a deadline. She wants spontaneity, but she doesn’t trust it to appear naturally. So she plans it. She choreographs casualness. She designs magic. She rehearses joy. Cherry Sad wants things to look effortless — but she’s working very hard to make them so.

Under the surface, she is controlled by longing, full of overgrown love, bursting with affection she doesn’t know where to put. She wants to be loved, held and chosen. And when she doesn’t get that warmth back, she starts negotiating with herself, bargaining and recalculating.

Maybe if I smile more. Maybe if I look away. Maybe if I try harder. Maybe if I wait a little longer.

Cherry Sad is a part of many humans. She is the part of us that waits for love in a room full of strangers, the part that imagines meaning into nothing, the part that stays at the party after everyone else went home, because leaving would mean admitting that nothing magical happened.

She’s sweet, but not harmless. Her hope is sharp. Her desire is clever. Her disappointment is loud inside her heart. She will smile through it, glitter on her cheeks, lipstick smudged like evidence.

Cherry Sad wants to be kissed, to be felt, she wants the night to break open and give her something – anything – she can hold.

And if it doesn’t, she will rewrite it until it does.
